You can tell when a new game release is approaching – not only does the hype machine kick up, but all the talking heads come out of the woodwork, ready to talk up their game and talk down their rivals. Gearbox aren’t shy of smack talking their rivals.

By rivals, I mean Valve (or more specifically Steam).

Gearbox Marketing Manager Steve Gibson (nee. Shacknews), put out a few sound-bites late last week during an interview posted on the London Games Festival blog. A portion of the interview about the games availability on Steam reads like an attack on both Steam … Read More...

Gearbox are still trying to convince everyone that Borderlands isn’t just a shooty Diablo. Their latest method is to reveal the in-depth skill trees, which they’ve done through the medium of Flash.

The four characters are all available (no creeping time-release hype-o-system here, no sir-ee!), cunningly through the links supplied below. If you want to impress your friends with your ability to click on buttons (after all, what is a dungeon-crawler if not a click-a-thon?) then the page link can be distributed for kudos.

Simple… Had the game still looked like it did originally, we wouldn’t.

But, since the art revamp, everyone has been stoked for Gearbox’s Borderlands, with its open desert landscape, action-FPS-but-with-RPG-loot-hoarding gameplay and cel-shaded-but-not graphics.

Goddammit, even the box-art looks damn cool!

Regardless, hit the jump for footage from the show. Highlights include some proper stylish Borderlands footage, further proof that the PC is realllllly the platform too play Left 4 Dead 2 on, more sneaky Alpha Protocol footage and more…

Since then, the game has had a visual overhaul which has been revealed in this months PC Gamer (i’m assuming the US print edition) which Gearbox have claimed is to keep the games visual style as close to their concept art as possible. The cynicist in me says its to differentiate the game from id’s RAGE, but i’m willing to give Pitchford & co. the benefit of the doubt.

Obviously, as we saw with Diablo III’s reveal, a change in art … Read More...
