E3 Round-up

e3expo

With the 2009 Electronic Entertainment Expo is now in the past, lets have a look at the highs and the lows of the event...

Nintendo made so many waves with the Wiimote 3 years ago, it's surprising it's taken Microsoft & Sony so long to get comparable technology out there, but this years E3 will be fondly remembered for both Microsoft's Project Natal and Sony's PS3-nis PlayStation Motion Controller.

Now too the games!  For the first time since I can remember, there seem to be almost as many original IPs than sequels.  Games such as Realtime World's APB, the clever and damn innovative Scribblenauts & Schafer's Brütal Legend (PC release plskthxbye?) all went down a storm.

Alas, nothing can compare really to the majesty & controversy of the sequels - Assassin's Creed II seems to (on the surface) have definitely made strides over the first game, Modern Warfare 2 looks to be a heart-pounding action game (but can it really step out of the cloud cast by COD4's mushroom cloud?) whilst Left 4 Dead 2 is generating all the wrong publicity - could it be Valve's un-doing?

Bourne Again? – Sam Fisher gets more physical with his Convictions

Any ideas?

As noted on the RPS article, Sam's been pushed into the background recently by newbie Altair & his bretheren, but after some time off to sort his life out following the death of his daughter and/or the shambles that was Double Agent, Ubisoft have unleashed Fisher back into the wild, ready to smash many a terrorists face into the nearest available basin.

OMG OMG OMG OMG! (or ‘How Andrew got really excited about new Monkey Island stuff’)

YAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!

There isn't a lot in the world that simultaneously makes me wee and crap my pants...  This very nearly was one of those moments!

Anyway, E3 this year is just getting better and better, with both the afformentioned Monkey Island re-release now confirmed for PC as well as XBLA and, in a completely left-field move, LucasArts putting everything they said that hurt the entire adventure community SO MUCH behind them and teaming up with Telltale Games to bring a series of Monkey Island episodes to both PC & WiiWare starting next month!

The former, which features both revamped graphics and voice-overs (no definite confirmation of Dominic Armato... yet!), is due 'sometime this year'.

Change of heart, or just the realisation by LEC that they were just complete tools to reject the market that made them a true gaming force in the 90's.

Real-life Mario Kart-but-not: Blur Trailer/Footage

Shocking...

E3 2009 hasn't even started properly yet and there's already TOO MUCH information pouring out of the LA Convention Center.

Activision & Bizarre Creations (of Project Gotham & retro sh'mup Grid Wars fame) have released the first proper trailer for Blur, their new arcade racer that features more than a passing hint of Nintendo's famous italian plumber-based go-karting simulation.

In a nutshell, it's Mario Kart with Vin Diesel & Paul Weller inplace of Toad & Donkey Kong with added Transit Vans & less CHEAP ASS BLUE FUCKING SHELLS!

Trailer down there somewhere...

Crysis 2 announced, coming to consoles and PC

More sub-zero alien shooting too come!

EA and Crytek have announced Crysis 2 which will hit the PC, 360 and PS3 and is powered by the new CRYEngine 3 which has been developed with current generation of *real* consoles in mind (because, face it, the Wii just wouldn't cut it).

“The development of Crysis 2 marks a major stepping stone for our studio,” said Cevat Yerli, CEO and President of Crytek. “This is not only the next game in the Crysis franchise, it’s the first title we are developing for consoles and the first title being built on CryENGINE 3. We are excited to have the support of EA Partners again as we work together to make the launch of Crysis 2 a huge event.”

“Nothing speaks more to the success of the EA Partners program than when a studio the caliber of Crytek continues to work with us,” said David DeMartini, Senior Vice President and General Manager of EA Partners. “Crytek is already one of the elite PC development studios in the world and we are excited to have the opportunity to partner with them in bringing their award-winning technology and gameplay to more platforms and a wider audience with Crysis 2.”

There's not much else to note yet, but i'd imagine we'll be seeing more of this as E3 goes on.
