Any Old Iron?

Question

Because gaming PCs seem to be coming back into fashion among my customers, I find myself in need of some older hardware.

Previously I've done deals with Sobtanian when he's decided to make yet another ludicrous upgrade, and have bought his "old" stuff at about 20% less than ebay average. Alas, he seems to have dried up for the moment, leaving me with no real sources of kit.

So I thought I'd start a thread in which we could all list any hardware we have lying unused(well not me, because it'd take weeks to list all the tat I've got lying around,  but nothing better than an i3 2320 or similar.)

So, anyone got anything? a graphics card maybe, or a cpu? Similarly, is there anything anyone is looking for?

As before, I'm still looking for an 1155 board, but it's to build a very cheap Starcraft 2 machine for someone, so if anyone has any kit at all lying around that might do the job, let me know.

I've got my old Sandy Bridge machine lying around, thinking of converting it into something for the kids to use, but haven't decided yet (and not sure if i've the space for it), if i don't end up doing something with it you can have the lot.

Well I only have about a week before the customer wants the machine, so if you're still mulling, I'll have to go to ebay. Otherwise let me know and I'll happily give you 100 quid plus postage sight-unseen!

I've got a Intel Core2duo E8400 on a Gigabyte EP43-UD3L (I think, definitely a Gigabyte board with P43 chipset) and a Zotac 9800 GTX+ Amp! edition boxed up and sat in a cupboard if they are any use to you.

775 stuff seems too weedy for games, but I'll certainly make a note on the off chance, ta!

I thought it might be a bit on the old side. Might see what other spares I've got and see if I can build an office system to sell locally.

Anyone got an Nvidia 780 they'd let go cheap? or even a 980.

Wanting to upgrade for a bit of extra FPS but don't want to commit to a full upgrade at the moment. Currently running a 770.

I know a guy with a Titan card for sale fairly cheap, but not sure exactly how much he wants.

EDIT: says £180 would buy it before it hits ebay - he's swapped to a 1080 so just wants to get some cash back.

I thought that card required a lot of power?

I'm interested but not sure I can run it :(

I don't know - he was running two of them in SLi, not sure what PSU he had, will check. But looking on google, the suggestion is under maximum load, the card pulls 250W - any decent gaming system should have loads of overhead there.

I'm even considering it, and I have a laptop!

Yeah, he was going to put both his titans on ebay, but someone offered him 200 quid so he jumped at it and now just wants rid of the other one. I got a 2500K, motherboard, 16GB of DDR3  and a GTX460 off him in exchange for assembling his new PC :D

Blokey says he was using a 600W PSU and so long as you have two PCI-E connectors you're fine. I can always send you molex to PCI-E adapters, but any decent PSU should have a couple of rails.

Gigabyte GTX Titan 6GB

Ah okay. I've just had a look at this http://gpuboss.com/gpus/GeForce-GTX-TITAN-vs-GeForce-GTX-770

It actually seems to perform worse on games than the 770, plus my 770 has 4GB of memory not the 2GB. I'm not sure I'd gain anything and certainly could get worse performance.

Feel free to correct me, I guess I was hoping it was the Titan X :)

That link doesn't seem to suggest worse performance, though not dramatically better. This one also seems to suggest similar

http://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-GTX-770-vs-Nvidia-GTX-Titan/2174vs2191

Compared with a 780, there's certainly not much in it, and the 780 may be cheaper, I dunno

Couldn't you try overclocking your 770 to squeeze a bit more out of it and buy you time?

If you look specifically at Crysis 3 and Metro Last Light. The 770 outperforms it considerably.

I'm not a 100% sure but I think my card is already clocked a bit. It's a good idea though, maybe I'll give it a go tonight.

It's a shame the new Vega isn't out yet. I'm thinking that might be my next upgrade.
