Got the demo of Max and the Magic Marker on the Wii a while ago and thought it was a laugh.

Managed to get the iPad version for $0.99 in the Labor Day sales.

Also bought R6: Shadow Vanguard and Zombie Infection for $0.99 each instead of $6.99 ;)

R6 is a FPS, controls seem to work well and the graphics are pretty good.

Zombie Infection is a Resident Evil clone. Controls are ok for the most part, graphics ok too. When you're aiming, your ability to move decreases to almost nothing. Still good fun though.

Surprised at how good / smooth the graphics are on iPad.

The recent remake of Pirates! is one of my favourite games of all time - I could never see the fun of the original but the newer one is fantastic.

??

AFAIK the most recent remake was for the iPad?

My point was that you said the newer one was fantastic. I think the last version before this year's iPad release was a mobile version in 2008. The last PC version was released in 2005-ish, so I was confused when you appeared to contradict yourself!

The dancing and swordplay are actually what makes it better. You tap the screen in time to the music to pull the governor's daughter, and swipe in various directions when fighting. Makes it more analagous to what your character is doing on screen. I always thought that the button mashing on the PC version was its weakest part, hence my view that the iPad version is better.

Ah no, "the newer one" was to distinguis it from the very original(C64/IBM PC era" or the Pirates! Gold! edition from about 1990 odd. From the looks of it the ipad version is essentially the same game as the most rcent pc one, just ported appropriately, so I suppose Pirates! 3.4 or something

Been playing a few recently:

Got back in to Modern Warfare 2 on the 360. Eventually grew to loathe it on the PC because of the amount of cheaters / haxors / wankers.

LA Noire. What a mint game, properly fresh. Really like that.

Grand Theft Auto IV: Episodes from Liberty City. Just started playing The Ballad of Gay Tony, really like the storyline and characters and the missions are pretty good too.

Ah yes!

1987 was the first iteration.

The current incarnation started in 2004 and the iPad is a port of that but, imho, improves on the PC version due to the swipey-tappy elements.

Tom, after about 10 cases or so, tell me if you're still finding it fun.

Me and Mrs S are struggling to stay interested, even though we loved it to begin with. I wonder if it's just us or a common theme.

I struggled hard to get even half way through the lost and the damned, which put me off gay Tony. But then a few friends said just what you said burp, about it being great. One friend, like me, hated TLATD but loved gay Tony.

Will play it soon.

Yeah it's much better, I didn't mind TLATD but it was very dark and gritty and serious whereas Gay Tony is lol funny all the way through, some of the best cutscenes I've seen. It's more like Vice City than anything else.

I'm really enjoying LA Noire. I've completed all the Traffic and Homicide cases, and i'm currently on my second case in Vice. I really get in to it, like when I was playing Shenmue.

My best mate is on the Arson cases and he says those are incredibly difficult, require a lot of thinking to figure them out.

I am very excited to future games, this is an initial release and I feel it'll be like Assassins Creed 2 when compared to the first game.

I have already played TLAD when it was released, I did like it but Gay Tony is far, far better. Agree with what burp says I do find myself laughing a lot at the cutscenes. Didn't really think about the Vice City bit but I suppose it is, probably because of the "Party", "Glamour" and "Nightclub" feeling that the game has.

How many cases is that, out of interest?

Glad you're still liking it :) we used to get in to it too (it's a good game to play with someone else who can suggest ideas etc) but as I say we kinda got bored ;)

And yes, no more Team Bondi. The PC release of the game still seems on, as ATI recently released a crossfire profile for it.

EDIT: Been playing lots of Deus Ex: Human Revolution all week. Just beat 3rd boss, so not far off. Lovely game, but it's a bit too long for my liking.

Looking forward to playing Space Marine today :)

Also, had a quick spin at Dead Island this week with Ataribaby (who still hasn't joined the forum!) - was goofy fun - but need to play it more cos it looks like it can get boring quick.

I think i'm now on the 16th case if I remember correctly, i'll have to double check.

I know Rockstar were involved with this game, so i'd imagine any sequel etc will be picked up directly by them or somebody else, don't you think?

On a scale of 1 to 10, exactly how underwhelming is it compared to the fantastic teaser trailer that was released a while back?

Compared to the trailer, I'd say 8. That trailer was too good for anything but the best of the best, which dead island isn't

Ignoring the trailer, and taking it as a game without that amazing teaser, then the best way to describe it is as one review put it: like the bastard child of fallout 3 (open world big map, rpg elements), far cry (island setting), and dead rising or condemned (melee visceral combat).

What it isn't, however, is an open world left4dead, no matter what the launch trailer makes you think.

The dead island trailer is talked about in this article.

Edit: This link specific to dead island:

Have to say I agree with the article. I'm fed up of game advertisers putting sad music over games, and drawing on emotions that are not at all related to the game. It's a cheap trick to get people to buy the game, and doesn't actually reflect the theme of the game.

I've just finished Bioshock 2, which I thought was absolutely excellent.

This week, for the princely sum of ten quid, I have aquired both Borderlands (complete with all the DLC) and Burnout: Paradise.

For more than that, I have also had to aquire an xbox 360 controller to play burnout with properly. This is completely worth doing. It has been absolutely ages since I've played a game that a) isn't focussed on killing (and yeah, if I will choose shooters ...) and :D is so much fun. I don't know what it is, but the game is an absolute blast. The graphics still have some pop (although given that I only recently upgraded to a laptop that could play anything not on 'low', I'm still being very impresed by how far everything has come in the last four years), and the game runs smoothly even on what still isn't the most powerful pc. The races are ok, marred by the lack of set routes to learn, but the stunts and the general driving around and mucking around mean that I'll be coming back to this for a while.

The last shooter I'd played before Borderlands and Bioshock 2 was quite possible Half Life 2 Ep 2, which makes me wonder whether all shooters have got better recently, or whether I'm just playing especially fun ones. Either way, running around shotgunning midgets has never been so fun.

I'd recommend all three games to anyone!

The music to Bioshock 2 is utterly awesome. In particular the theme that plays in the "good" ending practically brings a tear to my eye. I'm just gutted they only released the OST as part of the collector's edition of the game. I'd certainly buy it as a standalone release. I know there are copies on eBay, but I'd rather have a more legit source...

PC:

Company of Heroes: Tales of Valour

GTA 4

Counter-Strike Source

Ipad:

Rainbow Six

Crimson

Chess - looking forward to BattleChess being released!

Death Rally (Which is pretty damn good)

I liked Sid Meirs Pirates! on PC and I think the IPAD version is a good port but... the load times do let it down a little bit.
