Oculus Rift

114 posts in this topic

Seems like a lot of people are scared of the future and looking for an excuse to moan about OR - I find that weird, why anyone isn't enthusiastic about a working VR platform is beyond me!? I hope this is as amazing as it looks :D

I don't expect to use it for all games of course but it will make a lot of games even more enjoyable, IMO

Not scared of the future....just tired of waiting for it!, VR has been promised since pretty much 5 minutes after the birth of computers* and I'm STILL waiting!

*obvious slight exaggeration!

I really do want one! haha. Would love to know the cost!  Patience....

Edit - One website has guessed the OR at "less that $499"!!  I hope it's a lot less! haha

How useful the Oculus Rift is it very much dependant on the game type.  I doubt it'll be as immersive for battlefield as it is for star citizen.  The reason being in star citizen I'm sat in a cockpit and my physical world sensation sitting in my gaming chair with re-inforce the sensation.  Running around in a helmet (while sat in a chair) is going to suffer from some kind of detatchment, although I'm sure the user will adapt to the sensation and it'll still be very immersive in it's own right.  The idea of looking around my cockpit for a target and manoeuvring just sounds way more awesome.  I hope some of you will be investing in Star Citizen and Oculus Rift so we can do some missions together?

My estimation is for an early 2015 release (maybe Q1) and a price tag in the UK of £299.  Which for a new gaming experience is totally worth it in my opinion.

Edit to say sensation again.

Did you see the videos above of EVE: Valkyrie cptwhite?  Hopefully it'll be a similar awesome experience for Star Citizen!

Edit - If you want an immersive Battlefield experience cptwhite you'll have to invest in one of these! haha

I was wondering that myself. I had assumed it would be, since there'd prob be a lot of custom software to install to get games to work initially, but I'm not 100% sure.

For those of you wondering how immersive this truely is, this video seems to put things into perspective!! (no pun intended!)

Is it exclusively for PC as well?

Yep - the bods who make it say the consoles are too limited to run it at the mo. However, Sony is reportedly developing their own and so are Valve, so could be a crowded market before long. My mate's had one of the dev kits for some time, and I've yet to find an excuse to go and play.

You should give it a try. It's supposed to be quite amazing.

I dont get why you want a rift for flappy bird, it actually hinders more as you cannot see your bird. I can get it for say a 1st person shooter or drving game, but things like this, no dont see the point.

It was just a demo that someone created. There's loads of them just to show you the immersiveness of the rift. It's just a gimmick.  A laugh if you wish.

The Oculus Rift Dev Kit 2 is now available to order. Not shipping until July though. Full 1080p with positional head tracking. Much better than the first dev kit. Obviously not the final product but a damn nice bit of kit nonetheless.  $350 is anyone was interested!

I'd love to get one but its clearly best to wait for the final consumer model so I'll hang on for that.

Interested to see how Sony's competitor, Morpheus, compares.

I still think the Oculus Rift will be the better device, but probably good for the future of VR if the big companies are also getting involved.

Oh and just imagine the new Elite game in VR :D

So Facebook has acquired Oculus VR!!

Not sure if this is a good thing but Facebook do have platform to invest some capital into this project.  Apparently they've bought it for $2 Billion!

How long until we see Facebook develop a virtual "Playstation Home" type environment to walk around and socialise in?!!

I'm disappointed - I would have preferred them to release the first commercial product - I don't really understand going to all the effort of making the Rift only to sell out before it's finally available.

I also don't see how a VR platform links to Facebook - if there's some shitty link between using the Rift and my FB account then I won't be purchasing, they can fuck right off.

It never ceases to amaze me how companies like Facebook and Google can pay billions of dollars for a company that's barely made any money and doesn't yet do anything - it's like Dotcom Bubble 2.0.

I'd like to see Zuckerberg and his ilk on Dragons' Den - Duncan Bannatyne would rip them to pieces.

"So ye haven't taken a product to market yet, you've no protection because people are already copying your ideas and you haven't made any money. That's crazy. That is absolutely crazy."

"Well we've really started the conversation about how gamers will interact with the virtual.."

"No, ah'm not interested in whether you're innovatin' - that's not gonna get me ma money back if you're not releasing the product for another 12 months. And you want 100 million pound o' ma money for 5% of the kommp'ny? That's the most ridiculous thing ah've ever heard in ma life. Ah'm out."

*A promising start in the Den has quickly turned sour after our entrepreneurs received a severe dressing down from Duncan Bannatyne. Has Peter Jones spotted a further problem?*

"I like the product - I actually know about virtual reality headsets, I've tested several of them and I think I could do it better than any of them. But one thing intrigues me and that's this 2 billion pound valuation. How did that figure come about?"

"Erm, well Mark Zuckerberg wandered up and offered us 2 billion to take over the company."

"I'm out."

I know we're not allowed to use the word spacky anymore, but that's how I think of FB - it's spacky.

And so will the Occulus Rift be spacky.

Your Mum and your little sister will have them to play 'Mafia Fruit Farm' on Facebook.

This move will give Sony the opportunity to take the lead and release an overpriced, inferior product that will nevertheless dominate the market.

Shame.

Gav, got a chicle out of me!

The paranoia surrounding this is also escalating to silly levels. "FACEBOOK ARE GOING TO GET YOUR RETINAL SCAN IMAGES AND CREATE CLONES OF YOU". From the same people who willingly update a online database with their own personal details, share likes and dislikes and upload photos of themselves on to... And now are concerned about data?!

I can understand why the devs have accepted the offer - if someone came up to you and said "I'll give £2b for your idea" - how many would say no?! If they leave the devs to it and allow them to continue with their project as they intended, no worries. If it becomes the next social media device I'd be pretty pissed, but a nice chunk of that 2 billion would help me sleep at night.

I do understand why people get pissy about it, but in reality this appears to be what Oculus wanted.

They kickstarted an idea, got it off the ground with that money, so that they could then take it further and get more interest. Maybe FB will cock it up, maybe not, too early to tell, but they certainly do some cool stuff in the tech world.
