Geometry Wars Retro Evolved 2 Review

Geometry Wars Retro Evolved 2 is here!

Game Title: Geometry Wars Retro Evolved 2
Publisher: Activision/Microsoft
Developer: Bizzare Creations
Format: XBOX Live Arcade
Price: 800 Points.

The original Geometry Wars Retro Evolved for Live Arcade, was mainly put up to show the kinds of titles that could come out on Live arcade (the game having previously been given away in PGR2 and 3), in fact i’d think it would be safe to say that it’s probably one of the most popular titles on Arcade.

This sequel is probably one of the most anticipated Live Arcade games in a while (although, don’t tell Castle Crashers that!) and as such has quite a lot to live up to, and boy does it Live up to it’s predecessor.

Instead of simply pumping out another game exactly like the first one, Bizarre have seen fit to add in 5 new modes, 4 of which are entirely new.

Returning is the Evolved Mode and the Waves mode (last seen in Geometry Wars: Waves with PGR4), alongside new boys Deadline, King, Pacifist and Sequence.

Also returning from Geometry Wars: Galxies on the Wii and DS are the little Geoms, which when collected from your destroyed enemies increases your multiplyer – which now seemingly has no limit (as a side note, i had a multiplyer of at least 900 at one point!).

Each mode is designed to test a different skill and is a perfect way for them to challenge you and stop the game from feeling too samey.

Deadline gives you unlimited lives and 3 minutes in which to score as many points as you can, for someone like me who dies often, this mode is a godsend and you’ll be racking up the points in no time.

King only allows you to shoot from within little circles which appear on the map and quickly degenerate meaning you have to glide through waves of enemies being unable to shoot while picking up your precious multiplyers.

Pacifist is similar in vain to the achievement from the first Retro Evolved where you had to go so long without shooting, but this time you can go through “Gates” which act like bombs so that if there are any enemies nearby you can take them out and get the multiplyer increasing.

Sequence sees you try to beat 20 Challenges with 30 seconds on the clock (time is restored after each challenege), each challenge consists of a squence (NO WAY!) of enemies, if you die you fail the challenge and can move onto the next one – but there’s only so many times you’ll be able to do this before failing totally as you’ve ran out of lives.

I’ve not been able to try multiplayer (Yes, i have no friends), but it is offline only and for up to 4 players. You can even have 2 people controlling one craft – with one Steering and the other shooting which i imagine is probably as crazy as it sounds.

All i can say is that IT’S BLOODY GOOD FUN and you should spend your 800 points on it, as it is well worth it!
